CHALLENGES -
  • financial - initial infrastructure & manpower to set up, ongoing management
  • parental education - communication of needs & goals for project, addressing concerns, canvassing opinions
  • viruses & malware - ensuring security of devices & networks,
  • changing attitudes of management - allowing/encouraging use of pupil devices, formulating policies & procedures
  • changing attitudes of staff - embedding ICT in learning - not as an 'extra', exemplifying and supporting use
  • technical support for staff - minimising inconvenience caused by ICT 'problems', quick responses vital to ensure this
  • CPD Provision & ongoing support - formal/informal/directed/general - needs must be identified and accommodated
  • Hardware provision (school & authority) - ongoing replenishment phased out/reduced/replace with portable devices, need to maintain older equipment rather than dispose of it
  • inappropriate content on pupils' devices - build into AUP, address in eSafety education
  • security/login - duty of care, need for authentication, single log-in for network & wi-fi desirable
  • filtering (home vs school) - filtering set on wi-fi by authority/nationally in light of little or no filtering set at home - security implications
  • formulation of policies/waivers/AUP - needs to cover all eventualities, use of device, security, transport to and from school
  • insurance of personal devices - included in leased devices, provision of insurance for own devices by parents - required by AUP?
  • storage, security & charging - storage between classes/break times/PE etc, alternative provision for discharged devices, PAT testing of chargers
  • health & safety - pupils carrying heavy laptop bags plus jotters, books etc - provision of lockers?
  • functionality of device - e.g. flash issues on iPad
  • suitability of devices to purpose - i.e word processing on phone

OPPORTUNITIES -
  • interdisciplinary learning -
  • ease of access to information -
  • building skills -
  • portablility -
  • leasing scheme to access newer devices -
  • new devices every 3 years -
  • access to 'latest' technology -
  • similarity of devices for all pupils -

SHORT TERM AIMS -
  • research leasing options, terms etc for parents and A&B council
  • storage and security for devices in schools
  • provision of authority devices for pupils without own devices/with faulty devices
  • engage parents in planning and implementation of BYOD
  • address issues of cpd & support for staff
  • address issues of support for pupil devices - formal/informal/in-house/external?
  • set up platform for sharing practise & highlighting opportunities
  • research viability of setting up 'single login' across A&B schools, based on network login - ensures security & traceability of traffic

LONG TERM AIMS -
  • all pupils to have access to internet on personal devices in school
  • staff are confident to make use of ICT across curriculum
  • increased reliability of ICT access to staff and pupils
  • A&B council to have sustainable approach to procurement, updating and managing authority owned devices
  • review of ICT replenishment to allow different types of devices to be procured
